How to build a modelling portfolio in Glasgow
Whether you are just starting out or refreshing your book, a modelling portfolio has one job: to show an agency or client exactly who you are, quickly. This guide covers what to shoot, how many images you need and how to approach modelling agencies in Glasgow and across Scotland.
What is a modelling portfolio?
Your portfolio, or book, is a small, tightly edited set of images that shows your face, your shape and your range. Agencies use it to decide whether to meet you, and clients use it to decide whether to book you. A short, honest portfolio of strong images will always do more for you than a long one padded out with average shots.
Start with your digitals
Digitals, sometimes called polaroids, are the first thing most agencies ask for. They are simple, natural images with no heavy makeup, styling or retouching, so an agency can see you as you are today.
- A clean, plain backdrop and soft, even light.
- Fitted, plain clothes in black or white, so your shape is clear.
- Hair off the face, with minimal or no makeup.
- A front headshot, a profile, a three-quarter angle and a full length, both smiling and neutral.

How many images do you need?
For most new models, four to six strong images plus a set of digitals is enough to start. Aim for a clean headshot, a full length, a three-quarter shot and one or two styled, editorial looks that show personality and range. As you work, replace older images with better ones rather than adding more.
What to wear and bring to your shoot
- Fitted basics in black or white, plus one or two outfits that feel like you.
- Simple shoes: a heel and a flat.
- Clean, moisturised skin and natural hair, unless you are planning a styled look.
- References of images you love, so we can plan the shoot together.
At Woodside, sessions are shot on professional Godox flash in our West End studio, with three backdrops to choose from: oyster beige, chocolate brown and orange. Every portrait session includes five retouched images.

Comp cards
A comp card is a printed or digital card with your name, your measurements and four or five of your best images. Once your portfolio is shot, your strongest selects double as your comp card images, so plan your shoot with that in mind.
Approaching modelling agencies in Glasgow and Scotland
Most agencies take new faces through a submissions page on their website. Send your digitals, your measurements and a few of your best portfolio images, and keep your message short. Research each agency first to make sure they represent your look and the kind of work you want. Be cautious of anyone who asks for large upfront fees to represent you.
Test shoots with photographers
Test shoots are collaborations between models, photographers, stylists and makeup artists to build everyone’s portfolio. Agree in advance how the images will be shared and used. Photographers running tests can hire our studio by the hour, with backdrops, lighting and coffee included.
